WMF Empowerment Through Education Scholarships for Developing Country Students

The Wells Mountain Foundation, through the Empowerment Through Education (ETE) program, provides undergraduate scholarships to developing country nationals to study in their home country or a neighboring country. The Foundation believes in the power and importance of community service; therefore, all scholarship participants are required to volunteer for a minimum of 100 hours a year. Host Institution(s): Your choice of institution in your home country or in another developing country Level/Field(s) of study: Bachelor’s Degree in any field of study but applications are encouraged from those interested in pursuing degrees that will best help their local communities – medicine & health sciences, community development, law, education, social work, business, information technology, agriculture and engineering. Number of Scholarships: About 10-30 scholarships per year. Target group: Citizens of developing countries Scholarship value/duration: ETE scholarships range from $300 USD to $3000 USD annually and are provided throughout the undergraduate education of the recipient. The average scholarship amount is $1400. Scholarships may be used for tuition and fees, books and materials, and room rent. Eligibility: WMF’s ideal candidate is a student, male or female, from a country in the developing world, who: • Successfully completed a secondary education, with good to excellent grades • Will be studying in their country or another country in the developing world • Plans to live and work in their own country after they graduate • Has volunteered prior to applying for this scholarship and/or is willing to volunteer while receiving the WMF scholarship • May have some other funds available for their education, but will not be able to go to school without a scholarship Application instructions: Applications are currently closed. Joint Japan World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) is open to women and men from developing countries with relevant professional experience and a history of supporting their countries’ development efforts who are applying to a master degree program in a development-related topic. Host Institutions/Programs of study: JJWBGSP offers scholarships for over 200 Preferred Programs (.xlsx 49 KB) spanning a wide array of development topics and for 14 Partner Programs (.xlsx 15 KB) at universities in U.S., Africa and Japan in key areas of development, including economic policy management, tax policy, and infrastructure management. Target group: Developing country nationals Scholarship value/inclusions/duration: A JJWBGSP scholarship provides tuition, a monthly living stipend, round-trip airfare, health insurance, and travel allowance. Please note all JJ/WBGSP partner and preferred masters programs are 2 years or less and the scholarship covers the duration of the program. Eligibility: The applicant must meet the following eligibility criteria: • Be a national of a World Bank member developing country; • Not hold dual citizenship of a developed country; • Be in good health; • Hold a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree earned at least 3 years prior to the Application Deadline date; • Have 3 years or more of recent development-related experience after earning a Bachelor (or equivalent) degree; • Be accepted unconditionally to enroll in the upcoming academic year in at least one of the JJWBGSP Preferred or Partner masters degree Programs; • Not be an Executive Director, his/her alternate, and/or staff of all types of appointments of the World Bank Group or a close relative of the aforementioned by blood or adoption with the term “close relative” defined as: Mother, Father, Sister, Half-sister, Brother, Half-brother, Son, Daughter, Aunt, Uncle, Niece, or Nephew;

Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme

The Aga Khan Foundation provides a limited number of scholarships each year for postgraduate studies to outstanding students from developing countries who have no other means of financing their studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant : 50% loan basis through a competitive application process once a year. The Foundation gives priority to requests for Master’s level courses but is willing to consider applications for PhD programmes. Applications for short-term courses are not considered. Host Institution(s): Any university except universities in UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Norway and Ireland. Field of study: Any; not specified. Target group: The Foundation accepts applications from nationals of the following countries: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Madagascar and Mozambique. In France, Portugal, UK, USA and Canada, applications are accepted from those who are originally from one of the above developing countries, are interested in development-related studies and who have no other means of financing their education. Scholarship value/inclusions: The Foundation assists students with tuition fees and living expenses only. The cost of travel is not included in AKF scholarships. Half of the scholarship amount is considered as a loan, which must be reimbursed with an annual service charge of 5%. A guarantor is required to co-sign the loan agreement. The payback period is five years, starting six months after the study period funded by the Aga Khan Foundation. Eligibility Criteria: The Foundation only accepts applications of eligible nationals listed above who are residing in one of the countries where there are local Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), Aga Khan Education Services (AKES), or Aga Khan Education Board (AKEB) offices which process applications and interview candidates. Preference is given to students under 30 years of age. The main criteria for selecting award winners are: l) consistently excellent academic records, 2) genuine financial need, 3) admission to a highly reputable university or programme of study and 4) relevance of the field of study to AKDN’s focus areas. Candidates are also evaluated on demonstrating thoughtful and coherent educational and career plans, their extra-curricular interests and achievements, potential to achieve their goals and likelihood to succeed in a foreign academic environment. Rotary Foundation Global Scholarship Grants for Development

The Rotary Foundation offers scholarship funding through the Rotary Foundation Global Grants. The scholarships funds graduate-level coursework or research for one to four academic years. Host Institution(s): *Any approved University located in a country where there is a host Rotary club or district, outside of the applicant’s home country Level/Field(s) of Study: Graduate-level coursework or research in one of Rotary’s six areas of focus: Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, and Economic and community development. Target group: Non-Rotarians sponsored by Rotary District or Clubs Scholarship value/inclusions: The minimum budget for a global grant scholarship is $30,000 which can fund the following: Passport/visa, Inoculations, Travel expenses (as specified in the grant terms and conditions), School supplies, Tuition, Room and board, Household supplies, Language training courses (but not if university admission is contingent on improvement of language skills). Most personal and miscellaneous expenses are not covered by the scholarship funding. Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships for Foreign Students

Each year, the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. The research scholarship is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree as a minimum) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level. Host Institution(s): One of the 10 Swiss cantonal universities, the two Swiss federal institutes of technology or public teaching and research institutes. Level/Field of study: Doctoral or Postdoctoral Studies or Research in any discipline Target group: International students from more than 180 countries. Scholarship inclusions: The scholarship covers a monthly payment, exemption of tuition fees, health insurance, air fare, housing allowance, etc., as applicable. Holland Scholarship for Non-EEA International Students

Brief description: The Holland Scholarship, financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, is meant for international students from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s at one of the Dutch research universities and universities of applied sciences in Holland. Host Institution(s): Participating research universities and Participating universities of applies sciences Level/Field(s) of Study: Bachelor’s or Master’s Programme in eligible fields of study offered by the participating insitutions Number of Awards: Not specified Target group: International students from outside the EEA Scholarship value/duration: The scholarship amounts to €5,000. Please note that this is not a full-tuition scholarship. The grant is awarded for one year and can only be received once. Eligibility: • Your nationality is non-EEA. • You are applying for a full-time bachelor’s or master’s at one of the participating Dutch higher education institutions. • You meet the specific requirements of the institution of your choice. You can find these on the website of the institution. • You have never before studied at an education institution in the Netherlands. British Chevening Scholarships for International Students

Brief description: Chevening Scholarships are the UK government’s global scholarship programme, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations. The programme offers awards to outstanding scholars with leadership potential from around the world to study for a master’s degree in any subject at any UK university. Host Institution(s): Any university in the UK Level/Field(s) of study: Masters Degree Programme in any subject at any UK university Number of Awards: Around 1500 scholarships globally will be offered. Target group: The scholarships are targeted to citizens of Chevening-eligible countries. See the official website for complete list of countries eligible for Chevening scholarships. Scholarship value/inclusions: A Chevening Scholarship normally covers university tuition fees, a monthly stipend, travel costs to and from the UK, an arrival allowance, a homeward departure allowance, the cost of one visa application, and a travel grant to attend Chevening events in the UK. Eligibility: To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must: • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country. • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship has ended • Have an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry to a post-graduate programme at a UK university.
